When employee wellbeing and engagement work in harmony, we can better realize a thriving workplace; and ultimately enable performance in the face of change, transformation, or disruption.

Wellbeing has recently emerged as a key focus in conversations of HR professionals and at the executive table. But wellbeing has been a desired state of human existence for centuries – philosophers of ancient Greece wrote about how to acquire “the good life”.

And wellbeing cannot be compartmentalized into life outside of work. Work, our jobs, our organizations have a huge impact on our full life.

The state of wellbeing at work is at a tipping point:

  • The dominant business model to-date has often resulted in practices that treat employees as expendable resources, rather than recognize them as the innate structure of the organization.
  • Younger generations entering the workforce have different expectations of work, family, and life.
  • Organizations and employees are increasingly experiencing misalignment of purpose.

Addressing employee wellbeing is key for organizations to thrive. Outwardly, wellbeing integrates the critical needs of organizations and employees; it acknowledges their interdependence. Wellbeing serves as the catalyst to getting an organization back on a human-centric track – and to shape a business model for the future.

The great news is that wellbeing is addressable. And by improving employee wellbeing, both the employee and the organization benefits. Employees who have positive employee wellbeing are:

  • 125% less likely to burn out,
  • 32% less likely to quit, and,
  • have six times higher employee engagement.

So, what are the best ways to facilitate wellbeing at work?
